Ampair welcomes fifth apprentice to Dorset based wind turbine manufacturer

Dorset- based small wind turbine manufacturer Ampair welcomes its fifth apprentice engineering technician.

Ampair’s production manager Quentin Kelly-Edwards says “We took on Joseph Prior as our fifth apprentice the day after his 16th birthday. He finished his GCSE school exams in Dorchester a couple of months ago but legislation meant that he could not start work until now. He works in the electrical production team training alongside the other four apprentices we have recruited, and later he will spend time on mechanical production aspects. We train all our apprentices ‘on-the-job’ in the factory, in addition each evening three days per week, they report to one of the directors for classroom education. At the moment this concentrates on maths and principles of electricity and we set them weekly written homework assignments. In addition they do one day per week at college for level 2 and then may go on to level 3 studies. Our initial aim is for them to all become rounded electromechanical technicians able to work on any of our wind turbines, hydro turbines, or hybrid renewable energy systems.”

For every apprentice taken on by Ampair there were about one hundred applications. Ampair works in conjunction with the Bournemouth & Poole College, and with Paragon in Boscombe, as well as accepting direct applications from people attending other colleges in Dorset. After the initial screen by the colleges Ampair reviews the applications and then runs an assessment day at the Ampair factory. Quentin says “When candidates come in we give them a maths and English exam, and then a practical test before being interviewed. We only take the best and select the final candidates through elimination from the shortlist. Their age doesn’t matter to us – we interview fifteen year olds like Joseph was at the time, and we’ve interviewed people in their mid-twenties. The age range of the ones we selected for this year’s intake is now from 16 to 19. Unfortunately there was only one female applicant this year but they get assessed just the same as any other, and in fact the apprentices are often reporting to Elizabeth who is one of our trainee graduate engineers”.

Ampair is based in mid-Dorset at premises in Milborne St Andrew and so takes apprentices from all over Dorset and the five come from Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Poole, Blandford, and Dorchester. David Sharman, Managing Director at Ampair commented: “At Ampair we are a forty year old business and the UK’s oldest wind turbine manufacturer and we have always concentrated on selling turbines into unsubsidised markets in a commercial manner. We work hard to grow the business in a socially responsible manner and we are very mindful of the need to train the next generation of technicians and engineers. Ultimately we would like to take on more apprentices but unfortunately the government grant systems discriminate against companies like ours who have scrimped to take on apprentices using our own resources. As a result we have done this with no government grant support, and we must reduce the number we take in 2013 unless the government changes the rules of the National Apprentice Service. It is very disappointing that apprenticeship funding schemes penalise employers like us who try hard to do the right thing. It is real shame to be making this point in an otherwise good news story.”

Ampair announces further investment of £1.36m

Ampair Energy Limited is pleased to announce that it has successfully closed an investment round totalling 1.36m from Sigma Capital Group plc and private investors.

Ampair designs and manufactures wind turbines, currently ranging from 100W to 6kW and a range of deployable hybrid power solutions for off grid use. Ampair wind turbines have been manufactured in the UK since 1973 and the latest model, the Ampair 6000, is a 6kW device which has been designed for worldwide use in grid-tied applications, commercial off-grid applications and rural electrification. The investment will be used to support further development of the Ampair range and the expansion of the company’s existing commercial activities. SURVEY – What are the real implications of power supply failure for wind measurement campaigns?

This survey is anonymous and designed to gain a broad insight into the real costs of using various remote power supply technologies, the results of which will be shared with all participants.

To date we have not seen any surveys of this kind but if you know of any please let me know! Most of the answers are open text in order that we can record all of the issues experienced. Summary

Ampair is recruiting a Graduate Marketing Assistant to join an expanding renewable energy manufacturing business. The role is within the sales and marketing team with the role being focused towards supporting small to medium sized wind & hydro turbine systems, and electrical equipment.

Work responsibilities

The Marketing Assistant is responsible for supporting all the activities of the Sales & Marketing team. In particular the Marketing Assistant ensures that Ampair is able to communicate effectively with its audiences through efficient use of data, following through to the distribution of accurate, targeted information by mail, email, web and other means employed by the Marketing Department.

The key responsibilities are;

  •  ‘Shadowing’ the sales and marketing manager to provide daily assistance on a case by case basis
  • Cleaning and further researching of key industry, PR and customer contact lists
  • Researching international language magazines, websites and industry organisations to establish new market opportunities, potential distributors and marketing opportunities
  • Production and maintenance of marketing material, liaising with design agencies, printers, video production agencies etc.
  • Support with advertising budget control and preparation of advertising campaigns
  • Management of in house CRM system including migration to larger system in the near future.
  • Maintain and further develop company CRM system to provide efficient use of customer, press, potential customer and distributor information.
  • Issue and further develop effective reports from CRM information and from these provide strategic guidance to the management team as to the effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Assist with the staffing as required at local and international organizational activities, e.g. events, receptions, trade shows, workshops and training events
  • Liaison with and management of bookings, hire of equipment, HSE and travel arrangements for international trade event / conference attendance
  • Provide support for other management team members on special projects when required.
  • Understand and support the aims and objectives of Ampair and to ensure these are reflected in the delivery of any communications
  • Contribute to the identification of departmental objectives for the short, medium and long-term in developing and implementing the company’s Business Plan.

There are two broad development pathways available – a pure technical pathway, and a multi-disciplinary pathway. Progression within each will depend on individual aptitudes, experience, and hard work. Depending on performance and ability there is opportunity to move between pathways:

Technical pathway:

Typically for electrical or mechanical engineers who work as production technicians in the workshop for approximately a year, learning light industrial electromechanical techniques as applied to Ampair’s products and systems. Thereafter development typically is as field engineers, discipline design engineers, project engineers, production engineers and project managers.

Multi-disciplinary pathway:

Typically for technical numerate graduates with interests in the commercial aspects of renewable energy. Ordinarily they will rotate through sales & marketing,

This role is as electromechanical production engineering apprentice manufacturing components and assemblies for small to medium sized wind & hydro turbine systems, and electrical equipment.

The place of work will be in a light industrial unit in Dorset, in the village of Milborne St Andrew, which is 30-minutes from Poole, and 15-minutes from Dorchester and Blandford.

Entry requirements

  1. Good results at GCSE level in English, mathematics, and one or more sciences (equivalent experience considered). Higher qualifications are desirable but not essential.
  2. Demonstrated interest in and understanding of engineering, especially in systems for which safety and reliability are essential, e.g. automotive/aerospace/electrical.
  3. Direct experience of and/or demonstrated interest in making things or getting thingsmade using your own hands and own personal efforts, i.e. in a workshop, or
    equivalent position.
  4. An ability to work with written instructions, drawings, and through practicalinstruction.
  5. Enthusiastic and interested in wind and hydro engineering development, including in electrical and electronic control systems.

Ampair launches ‘off the shelf’ range of offshore power supplies

UK small wind turbine manufacturer Ampair has continued its push into the renewable hybrid power system market by launching the containerPod™ range of power solutions predominantly designed for providing platform power for the offshore wind measurement sector.

Jeremy Davies Ampair’s sales and marketing manager says that, “Onshore heated met-masts and LIDAR installations use between 50 and 200 watts of power and to date we have been able to power these with our existing solutions. However in any offshore installation, the loads are typically 400 Watts at a minimum, reaching up to well over 1kW for periods. The main reason for these higher loads is the requirement for essential navigation lighting and communications equipment to be powered coupled with the simultaneous use of traditional met-mast and LIDAR measurement systems on the same platform.”

Ampair’s OF4000 ‘containerPod™’ unit is a turn-key packaged power solution that includes wind generators, PV arrays and an integrated back-up diesel generator which is designed to ‘rescue’ the system should there be a prolonged bout of poor renewable generation weather. The OF4000 system is designed to power continuous loads of up to 850W for 12 months without the need for a support vessel needing to be chartered to refuel the unit.

“After extensive modelling with our in-house stochastic modelling software proAmpair™ we could see that that using a purely renewable solution just didn’t add up as they required much larger battery banks, larger wind turbine arrays and larger solar arrays. These carried a price, weight and deck space premium that was not attractive. From the model, we could see that the best efficiency was obtained by using a small DC diesel generator that should only need to be run for 50-100 hours a year. By keeping the generator run time so low, we still deliver the low/no maintenance benefit of a purely renewables-based system, but we can supply power year round in a much more cost and size effective package”.

Ampair’s containerPod solution includes a variety of proprietary innovations designed to minimise the platform size needed by its customers. These include a unique ‘through-deck’ turbine pole which allows the Ampair 600 wind turbine to be lowered vertically to chest height, and also a tightly integrated generator and fuel tank compartment which share a common bund.

David Sharman, Managing Director at Ampair commented: “Ultimately Ampair’s system can be configured to power all of the required loads on a met platform in one single containerised package with the added benefit of providing additional internal real estate for all of the customers electrical panels.
