Summary
Ampair is recruiting Graduate Technical Trainees to join an expanding renewable energy manufacturing business. There are opportunities in the Engineering, Production, and Sales & Marketing areas supporting small to medium sized wind & hydro turbine systems, and electrical equipment. Opportunities are available for a variety of levels and specialities (e.g. BSc, MSc, PhD).
The normal place of work will be in a light industrial unit in Dorset, in the village of Milborne St Andrew, which is 30-minutes from Poole, and 15-minutes from Dorchester and Blandford.
Entry requirements
- Degree qualified in an appropriate engineering or science subject.
- Demonstrated interest in and understanding of engineering, especially in systems for which safety and reliability are essential, e.g. automotive/aerospace/electrical.
- Self-motivated and with the ability to solve problems with innovative solutions.
- Able to deal with ambiguity and focus on results.
- Enthusiastic and interested in the renewables market.
- Mature outlook and ability to work in the demanding environment of a small company.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
Work responsibilities
There are two broad development pathways available – a pure technical pathway, and a multi-disciplinary pathway. Progression within each will depend on individual aptitudes, experience, and hard work. Depending on performance and ability there is opportunity to move between pathways:
Technical pathway:
Typically for electrical or mechanical engineers who work as production technicians in the workshop for approximately a year, learning light industrial electromechanical techniques as applied to Ampair’s products and systems. Thereafter development typically is as field engineers, discipline design engineers, project engineers, production engineers and project managers.
Multi-disciplinary pathway:
Typically for technical numerate graduates with interests in the commercial aspects of renewable energy. Ordinarily they will rotate through sales & marketing,
engineering design, and production & operations before settling in one area. At Ampair all graduates are encouraged and supported to develop to their maximum extent. Typical projects being led by current graduates include web-application software development; embedded microprocessor power electronics; and autonomous offsite field support. Graduates are encouraged to join professional bodies, e.g. CEng and support is available from experienced senior staff.

Salary
Starting at £16k/yr – £24k/yr dependent on skills & experience; rising per individual progression.

Ampair is a manufacturer of small wind turbines, small hydro turbines, and related electrical & mechanical renewable and distributed energy equipment. The business has a forty year
history. The customer base is global, literally from the Antarctic to Zimbabwe and most sales are for export. Ampair employs approximately twenty personnel who are almost all technically trained, including several professional engineers. Ampair invests heavily in research & development of new products.
Location and contact details
Ampair is located in a light industrial unit in Dorset, in the village of Milborne St Andrew, which is equidistant from Blandford, Poole, and Dorchester. Ampair is located in
Milborne Business Centre which is on the A354 on the Blandford side of the village.
Most employees travel to work by car from Poole, Bournemouth, Dorchester and the villages, and some car-sharing opportunities with other staff may exist by personal arrangement.
Other employees travel from Blandford using the 183 bus service (Salisbury-Blandford-Dorchester-Weymouth) however candidates are advised to review the bus timetable in this respect.

General experience & skills for all positions
An ideal candidate for any position would have:
- Ability to use own initiative and work unsupervised as well as work as part of a small team.
- Experience working within a technical small business environment where a sound level of adaptability, practicality, accuracy and attention to detail is required.
- Strong knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email and database packages, such as Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
- General technical understanding of low power AC and DC machinery of less than 10kW.
- Due to the nature of the work all technical employees must be capable of working at heights and be capable of swimming.
- Ideal candidates will also speak at least one non-English language.
Hours, Availability and Position Type
- Trainee working hours are flexible to enable college attendance.
- Full time positions are Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30 with 60 minute lunch & tea break (40 paid hours per week).
- Employees must be available to work such reasonable overtime as the business requires.
